Fueling the Fight is a community outreach program that assists families with a child diagnosed with cancer.
Did you know the average cost for a childhood cancer patient to stay at the hospital is about $40,000? It's even more for childhood cancer patients in Salina and western Kansas. Children diagnosed with cancer who live in these areas cannot be treated in Salina. A small percentage of childhood cancer patients can travel to Wichita to seek treatment, however a majority of these children and their families must travel to Kansas City to seek treatment. Some patients even travel outside of the state to receive care.
Our warrior wagon is filled with items for the entire family!
Each wagon includes snacks, travel essentials, games and activities for the childhood cancer patient and his/her siblings as well as
gifts cards for the family to help with gas, eating out and other essential needs during travel to and from treatment.
The program also provides:
• Holiday packages
• Information resource packets
• Annual family day for area families affected by childhood cancer
• Parent to parent support
• Assistance grants (see below)
Gas cards for families (will go into effect in 2021 in conjunction with the Fueling the Fight distinctive license plate.)
**Due to limited funds, we are only taking grant applications from Kansas residents.
