Did you know the average cost of stay in a hospital for a childhood cancer patient is about $40,000? Even more for childhood cancer patients in Salina. Children diagnosed with cancer who live in Salina, Kansas cannot be treated in Salina. A small percentage of childhood cancer patients that live in Salina must travel to Wichita to seek treatment. However, a majority of these children and their families travel to Kansas City seeking treatment. Some patients even travel outside of the state to receive care.
Friends Help Friends is a community outreach program that assists families with a child diagnosed with cancer. Families receive a warrior wagon filled with items for the entire family. Each wagon includes snacks, travel essentials, travel games and gifts cards for the family.
The program also provides:
• Holiday packages
• Information resource packets
• Annual family day for area families affected by childhood cancer
• Parent to parent support
• Assistance grants
**Due to limited funds, we are only taking grant applications from Kansas residents.
